Public Lesson Skill Levels

Level 1: Beginner

Rider just starting in lessons for the first time

  • Steering loose in the corral at the walk

  • Trotting on the lunge line working toward posting with hands on hips

  • Balancing in the 2 point position

  • Introduction to grooming, tacking, leasing, and handling

Level 2: Novice I

  • Steering independently (not nose to tail) in the corral at walk

  • Consistently able to post trot on the lunge with hands on hips

  • Working on posting trot in corral with use of neck strap

  • Consistently balancing in 2 point position at the walk and working on the trot

  • Working toward ending lesson with controlled walk in the big ring

  • Riders are encouraged to arrive early and stay after the lesson time in order to learn how to groom, tack up and cool out their mount correctly

Level 3: Novice II

  • Steering independently at the walk and trot consistently in the corral and working toward the big ring

  • Working on sitting trot no stirrups

  • Working on 2 point position with crest release over poles

  • Working on trotting 20m circles

  • Riders are encouraged to arrive early and stay after the lesson time in order to learn how to groom, tack up and cool out their mount correctly

 

Level 4: Intermediate

  • Consistently executes a pole course

  • Consistently executes a sitting trot without stirrups

  • Consistently executes a 20m circle and a figure eight at the trot, posting, 2 point and sitting with and without stirrups on various mounts

  • Working on cantering

  • Riders are expected to groom, tack up and cool out their mount correctly

Level 5: Advanced

  • Consistently cantering in control at large and in a 20m circle

  • Able to execute a figure eight at all 3 gaits and 3 positions on multiple mounts

  • Able to trot over cavaletti poles

  • Riders are expected to groom, tack up and cool out their mount correctly
